SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM):
HEALTH CARE, WELLNESS AND FITNESS
What is a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)?
The SHSM is a ministry-approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and assist in
their transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace.
A SHSM enables students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in the context of engaging,
career-related learning environments, and helps them focus on post secondary goals.
Ontario Ministry of Education, 2008. Reach Every Student
At SCC we offer a SHSM program in health care, wellness and fitness. This program helps students develop their understanding of health in a changing world by experiencing the developing world first hand.
In recent years, students have visited Ecuador, Costa Rica and this year the students will be heading to Guatemala. The students will have an opportunity to see the daily living arrangements of local people, and gain an understanding into the infrastructure that makes their lives easier. Using tools and knowledge, students are put to the challenge of designing practical methods to improve the health care conditions in the visited countries. While travelling the students will also be immersed into the language and culture of the locals and pushed to realize what they can do to help others.
ADVANTAGES OF EARNING A SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) IN HEALTH, WELLNESS AND FITNESS
The SHSM in Health, Wellness and Fitness enables students to build a foundation of sector-focussed knowledge and skill before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university or an entry-level position in the workplace.
