Our school motto embodies all that we do at St. Charles College.
Message from the Principal
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I hope everyone had a relaxing summer. We have spent the summer months setting goals, planning and preparing for the start of classes and completing important maintenance projects around the school. We are so eager to have all our students back on campus and making the very best of their educational opportunities. We look forward to meeting our new families and welcoming them to our great Cardinal community. I would like to extend a special welcome to our new elementary students in Grades 7 and 8, to our Grade 9 students, as well as to all of our students who have transferred here from other schools.
I feel excited to think of all the new possibilities and challenges a new school year brings. It is not only the knowledge that will be gained; it is the new friendships that will be made and the personal growth every student will experience. The intermediate and high school years are developmentally important in so many ways. Sometimes the path to personal growth becomes rocky and obscure. It’s important that our teens understand that we are here to support them, and to help them set goals and make the kinds of choices that will lead them to achieve those goals.
We are very excited about continuing our breakfast program, which will begin during the second week of school. We will be making breakfast available to all students each morning in Period 1. I express tremendous gratitude to the Human League, Better Beginnings, Better Futures, Boardwalk Bingo and Breakfast Clubs of Canada for sponsoring this wonderful program. I also commend our staff for coming in early and preparing food for our students each morning.
We will be running a homework support centre Monday to Thursday from 2:20 p.m. until 3:15 p.m. for all grade 7 to 12 students. This centre will be supported by the Teaching Staff, as well as by educational assistants. We encourage students to take advantage of the centre as often as required.
All St. Charles College field trips are accompanied by an official Sudbury Catholic District School Board field trip form that requires parental/guardian signature, and this form would include my signature and/or the signature of other school staff. Any other trips, such as those organized by Breakaway Tours! and S-Trip! are not official school trips and are not supported or endorsed by St. Charles College in any way. If you are unsure of the nature of any field trip, please call the school, and we will clarify any concerns you may have.
All students have also been provided with a student handbook and agenda book. There is a great deal of important information in the student handbook. Important upcoming dates for the school year are listed in the handbook. School policies and procedures are outlined in the front section of the handbook. Parents and students are asked to carefully read through the handbook with their son/daughter.
Finally, I want to thank all our families for choosing St. Charles College. We have a remarkable school culture that is based on trust and respect: where diversity is cherished and celebrated, and where students will embark on a process of self discovery and learning in a safe and welcoming environment.
If you have questions or concerns during the year, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, guidance counselor, vice-principal, or myself, as our doors are always open. I look forward to working with you and your son/daughter this year!
Mrs. Patty Mardero
The idea of St. Charles College was born in the early 1940's. Despite the fact that over 2000 children were enroled in Sudbury separate elementary schools, there was no local secondary institution. In 1944, Bishop R.H. Dignan of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie began to take preliminary steps to bring a Catholic boys high school to Sudbury. Finally on September 5th, 1951, St. Charles College commenced classes for the first time. Learn more...
